Finding Our "Place of Usefulness"
When we are out of work, as people with illness often are, it is helpful to find what the Presbyterians call a 'place of usefulness' in the world. One of my more disabled MS acquaintances makes a partial living as a pet sitter. The animals and their owners love her because she gives them such undivided attention. She says, "It lets me know I'm still here." Getting involved in helping others or doing some kind of volunteer work keeps some people healthy in situations where others drop under the weight of having no money and nothing to do...There are hundreds of ways to help, some of which we can do from bed or over the phone. We can pick one, try it, and if it doesn't work, try something else.
