Editor’s note: I first “met” David in Carol Sveilich’s amazing book of profiles titled “Just Fine – unmasking concealed chronic illness and pain.” I am indebted to Carol, and David, for sharing these stories, and lending their insights and support.

David Kaufhold: VP of Operations for Restaurant Chain, Chronic Pain Survivor

“The power of positive thinking, which was instilled in me at an early age by my mother, is the most powerful thought process for overcoming any negative situation.” –David Kaufhold

David Kaufhold has rheumatoid arthritis and scoliosis (which required spinal fusion surgery that left him with an iron rod running along his spine), but that hasn’t stopped him from becoming a very successful person with a winning personality and a great attitude toward life. “Pestering diseases are temporary because we’re temporary. Even a day-long aching joint session of rheumatoid arthritis is temporary, because eventually one has to go to sleep.”

In addition to adjusting his perspective to view health issues as temporary, David works hard to maintain a healthy sense of humor about himself and about life. Fortunately, his diseases have not adversely affected his married life, and he enjoys an impressive career as vice president of operations for a well-known, popular restaurant chain. “I never feel envious of other folks because I am fully aware that most people have their own cross to bear. My health issues stemming from scoliosis and rheumatoid arthritis are relatively minor in comparison to the laundry list of things that can cause people to be unhappy in this world.”
